OUTPOST
Is a physically and psychologically safe, inclusive music-making programme co-designed with and for young people in rural Somerset, Wiltshire and BANES.
Developed by Young People Frome in partnership with the Cheese & Grain, the project addresses the profound lack of creative opportunity for rural young people particularly those excluded from mainstream education or facing additional barriers due to poverty, isolation, neurodivergence or mental health challenges.

OUTPOST

Youth Music has now offered Young People Frome the opportunity to further develop the way young people can engage with the creative industries. The programme, called “OUTPOST”, will deliver inclusive, youth-led music opportunities for rural young people (14–25) in Somerset, Wiltshire and BANES. Through in-house, outreach and intensive sessions, participants will build confidence, skills and progression routes, while piloting innovative approaches including youth-led music venue takeovers, cross-art form collaboration and industry focused practice.

OUTPOST will commence March 2026
running for 2 years.

Young People Frome are putting a call out to Rural Young People that would like to sign up for a 12 month OUTPOST Core Team membershiP.

OUTPOST Core Team will support the selection of new music leaders, shape OUTPOST social media and outreach strategies, ensuring language and visuals are youth-friendly and relevant. They will learn skills in facilitation, team work, research and clear communication through these activities and training, and as the project progresses they will move to taking on aspects of group facilitation and leadership in music-making sessions, such as leading games and supporting other less-experienced young people.

The OUTPOST Core Team will meet for regular music-making sessions at the Cheese & Grain, using the Bert Jansch Studio and their workshop spaces. These sessions will be led by a professional music leader and activities will include inputs from guest artists with specific skills in composition, lyric-writing, live band work, beat-making, music production and music tech and performance.

This creative work will be complemented by the development of key skills needed to forge careers in the music and creative industries such as aspects of event management, venue management, working with promoters and producers, self-promotion and self-employment. The content is shaped directly by the young people’s musical interests, career pathways and goals. Core Team participants will also access one-to-one mentoring and pastoral support to help them build confidence, develop skills and progress their creative ambitions. The Core Team will also over see the Youth-led venue takeovers: Young people will pilot run either the Bert Jansch Studio or the Cheese & Grain performance space. They will take ownership of configuring the stage, sound, lighting, and programming, gaining technical, organisational and leadership skills rarely accessible to rural youth. The Core Team will also over see the Cross-artform collaboration: piloting creative intensives that bring together music with theatre, visual arts and dance. This will open up new forms of expression, broaden participation, and create a unique model of interdisciplinary practice rooted in young people’s interests.

Young People Frome will over 24 months:

1. Sustain and grow inclusive music-making opportunities for 25 rural young people through The Bert Jansch studio at the Cheese & Grain providing consistent access to collaborative, youth-led music activity in a high-quality, supported environment.

2. Extend outreach to 60 young people excluded from school or disengaged from formal education, creating creative pathways for those often furthest from access. Engage a further 60 young people in creative intensives, supporting their music and creative development.

3. Support musical progression and creative development, responding to young people’s interests in production, beat-making, writing, reviewing, performance, and commentary offering a route into the creative industries from a rural setting.

4. Develop the leadership and facilitation skills of young people, offering training, mentoring and pathways into creative youth leadership and cultural participation.

5. Raise the profile of young rural creatives through live events, showcases, documentation and media platforms ensuring their work is visible, celebrated, and shared.

6. Build a sustainable, youth-led model of inclusive practice rooted in co-creation, care and place contributing to broader conversations about how rural young people access music and creativity.

7. Strengthen a strategic partnership between Young People Frome and the Cheese & Grain bringing together youth-led community music with a nationally recognised live music venue.

The Outpost tackles deep-rooted geographical, social and structural barriers to music-making and the creative industries.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are a core part of everything we do

Our activities are creative, inclusive, and youth-led.

We offer a rare opportunity for young people in need of additional support: the chance to express themselves, connect socially outside of education, work collaboratively, explore creative industries and develop new artistic and technical skills.

Provide activities and real-world learning environments which enable young people to develop their knowledge, skills, capabilities and capacity, via experiential, real-world learning, and development programmes.

Increasing skills development; support for leadership, civic engagement and participation; fostering identity, purpose and belonging in the young person.

Providing a space where young people can develop their voice and establish their place in the community.
